| Staged by Blue Chair Theatre, a company of young, energetic actors, this play is an engaging look at relationships, dating, sex, desire, love and the whole damn thing. |
The second part, set in a speed dating hall (if that’s what it’s called), is introduced by a crazed Cupid with a stopwatch, well played by Megan Thompson, and good ensemble work came particularly from Jade Wenban, who has a nice line in dry asides, Luke Stephens as the ego-centric Don Juan, Phillip McKechnie as the engineer understandably frustrated by his date’s constant references to her ex, and Daniel Vuleta as Gary, the gormless geek.
The final part, played by the female actors at the loo in an anonymous nightclub, is spot-on in its speed, prevalent sense of inadequacy and not measuring up to both peer and opposite sex pressure, and is crammed with snaky put-downs, alcohol-soaked vulgarity, and fitful romanticism.
In a work co-written by five people (Jessica Birnbaum, Emma Birnbaum, Justyna Kiczor, Simone Sky and Megan Thompson), and all twelve actors playing several parts, it is difficult and invidious to indicate too many special contributions, but great credit must go to the writers, director (Jessica Birnbaum) and the whole ensemble, for an excellent example of group-devised, socially accurate and highly entertaining theatre.
